Learning how to duck hunt can be great fun.  Where else can a grown man or woman get up at unheard of hours, dress in silly cloths, wade through mud and freezing water and still be considered sane?  Don’t be alarmed when you hear someone tell you that learning to duck hunt is expensive.  It doesn’t have to be.

1. Wear clothing that will blend in with your surroundings.  There are numerous manufacturers that make clothing with various camouflage prints on them.  Pick your favorite.  Make sure you have a coat, hat, two pairs of gloves and a face mask.  For a cheap alternative look for a cheap camouflage rain suit you can wear over an old coat.

A reloading press is the device that provides the mechanical leverage to reload the ammunition. The press holds the dies that will reform, prime and reload the shells. Most reloading presses are self-contained. They normally come with all the dies, bushings, charge bars, and other accessories used to load one gauge of shot shells. Most basic reloading presses normally have powder and shot reservoirs which allow the operator to perform each step one-by-one to reload a shell.

3. Buy some decoys and a decoy bag.  If you will be hunting a marsh area buy puddle duck decoys (mallard, pintail, teal).  If you will be hunting open water for divers buy diving decoys (bluebill, redhead, canvasback).  Start with just a dozen decoys and you can add more each year to get a variety.  I prefer the weighted keel decoys because they can be thrown in the water and right themselves but you may want water keel decoys if you have to carry them a long ways as they are lighter.  Look at garage sales for decoys, every year I find some that can be bought cheap.

The other key difference between hunting land vs water is the calling. Generally speaking the language used by geese is much more robust on the land as opposed to the water. On the water you can get away with a simple series of clucks. Literally just repeating what the geese say to you as they are flying is a great tactic to get them to notice your spread and glide right in. In the field it usually isn’t that easy. A mixture of clucks, grunts, groans and inverted clucks are all a standard mix you will hear from geese actually feeding in a field. Incorporating them into your calling arsenal is very helpful to get geese in your face for quality shots.

In order to transform a loaded shell from a fired hull, it takes approximately seven press handle pulls. This re sizes the case, removes the fired primer, primes the shell, drops a powder charge, seats the wad, drops the shot, starts the new crimp and then completes the crimp. You must complete each step on each single shell prior to starting on the next shell. You usually just move from station to station on your reloading press. You will also want to be sure to purchase a reloading manual specifically for shot shells and follow the instructions to insure safe reloading guidelines.

Although not an absolute necessity, but it will certainly make the task easier, would be the purchase of an inexpensive reloading bench to hold your press. Many weekend shooters find shot shell reloading a relaxing, money-saving, hobby. For anyone who does much shotgunning or clay target sports, reloading your shot shells will definitely save money

Carted deer hunting - Blood Sports in Ireland

For the deer hunter looking to stay in practice in the many months between seasons, he need not look further than his own computer. There are many deer hunting games available both free on the internet, and for a price at the electronics store. This will allow the hunter to work on his aim and reaction time, and stave off some of the boredom he may suffer from in the off season. There are a few options available, all having different benefits:

The First Era, Pre-Civilization

In this time frame, from before great cities to the first starts of basic civilization, the human race survived on their skills of scavenging and hunting. In cultures similar to those of the first era and pre-civilization, women had the roll of caring for the home and preparing the food brought in by the men. Some portions of modern day Africa have conditions similar to this, where they do not have a great deal of money, and a similar style of hierarchy. The men all learned how to hunt, and they held these hunts daily to feed themselves. Unlike today, all hunting was for survival, and none of it for sport. All of the materials from the killed animals was used, from the bones to the pelt. Hunting was also a method of determining who was the bravest warrior. The bravest would hunt the ferocious creatures that lived nearby their homes. These kills were a vital part of the early hierarchies.

A wide variety of different weapons were used during this era, from slings to spears crafted of wood and stone. For large prey, the hunters would work together in packs, similar to how a wolf hunts to bring down their quarry. The only trophies kept were antlers and teeth. Occasionally the skulls would be kept as decoration or as symbols of the clan or family group. This oldest form of hunting was the basis in which the present was formed.

Cabela’s Big Game Hunter 2007
This game also offers the hunter the choice of hunting any number of other species. It focuses not so much on the hunt itself, but on the excitement of the hunt. This is also the 10th anniversary edition and is sponsored by one of the biggest names in hunting gear. While this game also has a bigger price tag, for the adrenaline junkie hunter, it’s a win.

Deer Drive
This game focuses only on deer. It is 3-D arcade style, and allows the hunter to enter into an area with deer, moose, and other wild animals to choose from. It is available online through the publisher’s website.

ESPN Deer Hunting
This game is one of the best available for deer hunting, but that may be because it is totally free. It is available through ESPN’s website and Flash will be necessary to play, but most computers already have this installed anyway. The hunter can choose the type of stand or blind he wants to use, and while the graphics are a little on the basic side, for a free game, there certainly isn’t anything to complain about!

Deer Hunter
This is possibly the oldest example of deer hunting virtually on the market. While there have been no new versions released lately, it does offer the hunter classic hunting techniques. The graphics aren’t of the quality of some of the other games, but for the hunter who wants just the basics, this is a nice option
