First note: If you are new to a small carry, or you are just getting used to the feel of your new holster, it is wise to wait until you are positive that you have mastered your holster technique, before putting a loaded carry inside. It is best to always practice with an unloaded carry!

Many of you have seen the shoulder holster glorified in films and literature, and of course on nightly cop shows. A shoulder holster is a very useful and helpful, and was created for a special purpose, the concealment of your small arms.
If you are non-law enforcement (concealed small arm licensee) you should always follow the rules of safety, to guarantee your own protection and comfort, and of others around you. If one works or live in an area where you don’t have any limitation as to your cw and so carry it on a once a day basis, you want ease of access as you are going about your daily activities. You could be looking for the comfort and flexibility that a shoulder holster offers.
Shoulder holsters are ideal for concealed automatic small carries, and a flat carry conceals better than a revolver. However, some shoulder holsters do restrict your clothing options, and you cannot take off your jacket or shirt if you need to keep it concealed. After you have perfected holstering, it is always wise before going out with your concealed carry to practice getting your carry out of the holster with the clothes you have on. You may find it hard to get your coat or shirt coat out of the way of the draw.

A point to make before you strap on your shoulder holster is that your cw under you clothing, and next to your body will be exposed to high levels of moisture . You may find that this can create pitting and rusting of your small arm, and it will be necessary to take time to clean and oil it on a daily basis. If you do not have a concealed carry, or are considering purchasing on you can decide to look for one that gives a highest level of rust resistance, and is the correct size underneath your clothing.
Choosing a shoulder holster is a particularly personal preference, it will be based primarily on your own private needs and preferences.
The majority of CW owners have chosen to hold a concealed carry for their own private protection, and that of their family.
There are lots of different things consider when selecting a shoulder holster. You’ll need to choose if you’re going to need a vertical holster or a horizontal holster.
What kind of small arm you will be carrying, may leave you with only a few choices. There really is not a one size that fits all.
If you will be holstering different size small arms than it is best to go in store and find the best fit for the largest carry. As far as size goes if you are large chested, then you may find that the shoulder rig is going to be a bad fit, and difficult to use.
For most people the belt and the shoulder rigs make the most sense for a routine carry. You may find that the shoulder holster offers certain advantages including not having to wear a belt (makes sitting easier), more balanced, the option of a second carry, a concealed carry can be drawn quickly and unobtrusively.
The shoulder holster is the most practical of holsters if you have an assignment or job that requires you to sit for long periods of time. It is for this is the reason, that so many police, army pilots and chauffeur-bodyguards use shoulder holsters.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHOICES?
Vertical Holsters
Your first option is a vertical shoulder holster; it is mostly because you’ll be using a particularly big carry. Many people swear by it for comfort and ease of use. The vertical shoulder holster requires that your CW will have to be held in an upright or downward position to be carried successfully. A vertical shoulder holster is the most uncomfortable of the shoulder holsters. It is generally worn by law enforcement staff. The holsters are built to hold the cw in a vertical position of the body. The barrel will either be pointed upward or the barrel will be pointed downward.
Horizontal Holsters
The horizontal shoulder holster holds the concealed carry in a horizontal direction from the body. These holsters often position the barrel of the carry to be pointed away from the body of the wearer. This direction is in generally pointed behind the individual that is wearing the holster.
With either sort of shoulder holster, you may find the holster is worn like that of a backpack. The gun holster is mounted on either one of 2 different straps which are attached to make the holster.
This holster may require you to wear a vest or an open jacket to hide the mechanism and cw from being noted. This is most frequently seen in pilots who are wearing flight suits, officers or with senior officials who are wearing camouflage. In these cases, the holster and the gun will be plain and the gun is bigger than an average person will carry out in public.
You will wish to consider your options very carefully, and put some thought into it when you are tying to select the right shoulder holster.Think about how you will use your cw, and also your body size, and proportions. It is important you have a correct fit for the small arm you are have or are getting. A poor fitting holster can create excessive wear on your cw and be difficult or near impossible to draw, or even create a bigger problem (you cw has fallen out on the ground).
Consider all your personal preference, your body frame, how you wish to use your cw you will find a holster that will satisfy all your carry needs. Women usually find that their bodies generally have different contours and proportions than men. When choosing a holster they need to take into account that they have shorter trunks, higher waists. The companies seem to have been paying attention to this fact as more holsters are being designed primarily for use by women. Purse holsters can be attractive, add a great sense of personal saftey too.
It worth repeating
NOTE: If you are new to a small carry, or you are just getting used to the feel of your new holster, it is wise to wait until you are positive that you have mastered your holster technique, before putting a loaded carry inside. It is best to always practice with an unloaded carry!
